Plug-in solar is coming to UK homes: what should you check?

Do not buy a plug-in solar kit simply because it fits a UK socket. The new legal route is due to start on 27 August 2026, but only complete systems that meet the government's interim specification are intended to qualify. Batteries are excluded from this first scheme. Before paying, check the product evidence, the proposed circuit and mounting position, any landlord or freeholder permission, and who handles the network notification.

If a seller cannot answer those questions clearly, wait. A familiar three-pin plug does not turn an unfamiliar generator into an ordinary appliance.

What changes on 27 August?

Current coverage of the 27 August change describes a new route for smaller solar systems that feed power into a home's existing electrical installation through a standard socket. The date is a legal starting point, not a guarantee that suitable products will appear in every shop immediately.

The government's plug-in solar outcome says products must comply with its interim product specification. It also makes an important distinction: the route covers solar generation, not plug-in batteries or combined solar and battery products.

Quick answer: look for evidence that the complete system meets the current UK requirements. Do not rely on the shape of the plug, a marketplace badge or a seller's use of the word compliant.

Start with the complete product, not the cheapest panel

The final interim product specification treats plug-in solar as a complete device. It includes the solar module, inverter, manufacturer-supplied connection lead and plug, suitable cables and connectors, and a mounting system intended for the chosen position.

This matters because parts that look compatible may not have been assessed together. Avoid building a kit from an imported panel, a separate inverter and an unrelated lead. Ask the retailer for the exact product documentation and instructions that cover the whole assembly.

Check the home before choosing the kit

A compliant product still needs a suitable place to work. The panel must be mounted as its instructions require and protected against wind, weather and movement. An improvised fixing on a balcony, fence or flat roof is not a sensible shortcut.

The electrical side also deserves care. Do not open the consumer unit or guess which sockets share a circuit. Ask the seller what circuit checks are required, when professional assessment is advised and whether the supplied instructions make the route clear for an ordinary user.

At the time of writing, the official specification records a limit of 800 VA apparent output and says current GB network rules restrict the arrangement to one device per household unless those rules change. It also points to separate arrangements in Northern Ireland. Ask who completes any required G98 or local network notification instead of assuming that plugging in is the only administrative step.

Ask these five questions before paying

  1. Is this a complete compliant product? Ask for the evidence and the current UK instructions, not a general claim about European use.
  2. Does the supplied mounting system suit the exact position? A balcony rail, wall, garden frame and flat roof create different loads and permissions.
  3. What must be checked in the electrical installation? The answer should explain the circuit requirements and when a competent professional is needed.
  4. Who deals with the network requirement? Confirm the G98 or local notification process and keep the record supplied.
  5. Do you have permission? Renters and leaseholders should check their agreement and obtain any required written consent before fixing equipment to a balcony, wall or shared exterior.

Will plug-in solar suit how you use electricity?

Solar generation is most useful when the home can use power while the panel is producing it. Your result will depend on daylight, shade, orientation, safe positioning, the kit's output, your daytime electricity use and the price paid. A headline saving from another household is not a promise for yours.

Battery storage is outside this first route, so do not assume spare daytime generation can be saved for the evening. If your immediate problem is summer comfort, start with lower-cost steps to cool a hot room without air conditioning, such as keeping direct sun out before adding more equipment.

Give new home technology the same buying test as furniture

Plug-in solar may become a useful option for people who cannot justify conventional rooftop panels. It is still a product that must suit the home, the budget and the way electricity is used. What should you do before the launch date?

Save the government outcome page and wait for the promised consumer guidance and clearly documented products. When kits appear, compare the complete product, instructions, mounting method, circuit requirements, permissions and network process before comparing price.

Write the five questions above beside any product you are considering. If one answer is missing, pause the purchase and ask the retailer for evidence. That is a better first step than buying early and trying to make the home fit the kit later.
